No you should not tip. As a server myself it pisses me off to see tip jars everywhere. I only get paid $2.13 an hr plus my tips and I work my butt off for those tips. Most days I make what I need to so I can pay the bills and have some left over. Every once and a while I have a day where everyone wants to be cheapskates only tip 10%. The people at sandwich shops and other places get a steady wage this is not so with servers. I wish it wasn't that way but that is the way the restaurant business works. The only people I tip besides a server would be my hairdresser and the pizza guy. Always take care of the servers. They try their best to take care of you.
In Addition
By the way to Get a Life you don't know crap about waiting tables. It is harder than greeting people at Wal-Mart. I have to not only take food and drink orders I have to make sure the food is right and juggle 4 tables at the same time. As well as help other servers and multiple other duties. For the most part I like my job and use it to pay for school but it's ignorant rude people that make it hard sometimes.

I have fussy habits so I watch how they make my sandwich - no mayo, ketchup, mustard, please - and if they do what I asked, I tip. They get to know you and make an effort to do it right the first time.
I have even mentioned in a local shop that didn't have a tip jar that they should put one out.
As others note, these folks typically make minimum wage. If they still provide you with good service, a tip seems in order.
Additionally I look to see if the place is being kept clean - tables bussed and wiped down. They may not be bringing you your sandwich at your table but they may have to clean up after some of the slobs that can't seem to find the trash can or their mouths.

Depends. During the week I might decide to stop at a "Sonic" for lunch. I feel like I should tip the person on the roller skates that brings my meal. The next day I might go into a Subway and stand in line for my order. No tip here. Wednesday..I might go into a sit down place and the waiter takes my order..and is friendly...tip deserved. Thursday...I'm broke...I bring my own lunch. Peanut butter sandwich..bag of potato chips and a pickle. No tip there.

Technically, it's not tradition to tip at those places, but it's becoming a recent trend.
Some people do, and some people do not. The way I see it is simply because there is a tip jar, don't be guilted into tipping. Tip if the place is quality, and the employee's work hard.
The entire tradition of tipping began because people use to make NO wages, and so only made the money people we're willing to give them. The reason the waitress tip policy remains in effect, is because if they gave them minimum wage people would stop tipping, and thus waitresses would actually make less money than with tips.
I'd say you don't have to tip if you don't feel it was worth it, but if it's your favorite place, or they really went out of their way, a quick tip never hurts.
A tip jar is just a means of making you guilty, and reminding you to tip. It's like an advertisement for a tip.
Formally, there is no obligation to tip in those situations, so just call it as you feel.
IMO, good service is the standard. Great service is always worth a tip. *Shrug* But that's just me.

If it's a Mom n Pop shop where they know you by first name, and you talk to this people, and they know what you get every morning, then yes. When I come in the coffee shop and they know which coffee I like, the size, and what type of pastries I am getting, they do earn their tip. Starbucks kids who do not even take the time to pull my shot s of espresso properly, no way.

I usually keep the bills while whatever change I get, I drop in.
They see and hear that I tip, and the next time I come in, they make my sandwich thicker! Or more shrimp in my fried rice! They aren't expecting even 10%. The extra change I think is just a way to say, "thanks for settling for this crappy job, because now I have a decent lunch quickly".

I don't tip at all. The only tip I leave is get a job that pays better. Waiters and waitresses have the easiest job in the world. The greeter at Wal-Mart works harder. We have been brain washed into believing this tip thing. A woman getting her kids off to school works harder and never gets a tip. Thank You.

No because in some places, it's taken as an insult to tip those that are paid well.
