I tell people all the time that I don't listen to country music, but that I like Johnny Cash. I always get a strange look and then whomever I'm talking to says that Johnny Cash IS country. Your opinions?

I have always looked for him in the "country" section at the record store, but I don't really consider him to be country. I've always said he was more rockabilly than country. Thanks for all the answers!! =)

Of course he's Country. A lot of rockers like him cause Nashville turned it's back on him, and the rockers took him in. Rock producer Rick Ruben started producing his albums in the mid 90's, and he made country versions of rock tunes like Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage". His last hit "Hurt" was a Nine Inch Nails song". Cash is cool because he basically told Nashville to **** off. Dumb rednecks made a big mistake. He became more popular then ever.

Well, what do YOU consider him to be?
I've always thought of him as country. On the other hand, I believe he was one of the original artists for the Sun record label, which also introduced Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. All those guys except for Cash are associated with rock. So, maybe Johnny is rockabilly?

Johnny Cash was once known as a rocker, he traveled with Jerry Lee Lewis and he was a teen idol, only when Johnny Cash got older he become a rocking country singer! Keith Whitley (before he died) was a countrysinger and recorded on a country Label but he could rock with the best of them.

Not only is he country, he's the very epitome and embodiment of country. It doesn't get any more country than Johnny Cash. It's the cheesy pop crap on country radio that isn't country.
