Linea Nigra
That vertical line on your belly is a pregnancy trademark that shows up on moms-to-be of all stripes.
What it is: The dark vertical line that often appears between the belly button and the pubic area.
What causes linea nigra: Hormones, which are also responsible for your newly darkened areolas and freckles as well as an impressive variety of other skin anomalies, are behind this weird little stripe — which you've earned just by becoming pregnant.
What you need to know about it: Your baby is completely cozy and content inside your belly, but there's some wacky stuff going on outside. One especially noticeable oddity is that dark line running down the center of your tummy, from just under your belly button to your pubic area. This linea nigra — literally, the "dark line" — is likely to be more pronounced if you have darker skin, but never fear: It fades a few months after your baby is born.
What to do about the linea nigra:
· Sit tight. After your baby is born, the line should gradually fade all on its own.
· Spending too much time working on your tan can intensify skin discolorations. Use sunblock (at least SPF 15), or keep your belly under wraps.

The vertical line, known as "linea alba" (white line) extends from the navel to the pubic bone. Most women do not even know they had this line 'til they get pregnant, but it's something that all human bodies have. This line, which is barely visible before pregnancy, becomes more prominent as a woman's term progresses, and turns into a "linea negra" (dark line). It generally disappears a few months after the baby is born. Linea negra is generally more prominently visible in darker-skinned women as it is a form of hyper-pigmentation.

It's called linea nigra and is caused by an increase in the production of melanin.

It "appears" because of the increase in hormones...they make your nipples darker and can make scars and stuff appear darker too.

if it's white or pink then it's probably a stretch mark from the pregnancy. your midrift is growing and your skin can't stretch as much as you'd want, so Stretch Marks appear.
If it is stretch marks, then try using Cocoa Butter to make it disappear.
