How do i explain this equation to her? My friend, i mean. She has a bit of a problem with math...

-6-3(2k+4)=18

I know its foil but she cant ver much get it. So can someone explain it in a way youd tell a say, 9 year old? I don't mean to insult you!

first you have to solve the brakets which you'll get
-6 - 6K - 12 = 18 then add the 12 to 18 you'll get 30
-6 - 6K = 30. now add the 6 to 30 you'll get 36.
-6K = 36. now divide -6 to 36 which you'll get - 6.
k= -6 <--that's the answer

Distribute the -3 first: you want to get rid of the parentheses so that it looks easier to handle

-3x2k= -6k+4

Then combine your Like Terms:
Both the +4 and the -6 don't have any letters, so together they can combine and make -2.

So now you're left with your -2 and your -6k.
These can't combine because they arent like terms (the -2 is just -2, not a -2k)
At this time, ask your daughter if she should combine these two to make sure she understands the whole "Like Terms" thing.

Finally, continue with your like Like Terms by stepping it up a bit now that she understands, and get rid of the -2 from one side by adding +2 and combine it with the 18 on the other (also like terms) You do this to keep it balanced: you want to do the same thing to both sides.
This will leave you with : -6k= 20

Now divide to get rid of your k:

-6k =20
----- -------
-6 -6

The two -6s on top of each other cancel out cuz they're the same

But the 20 /-6 doesn't divide evenly so you must reduce it.
They can both be divided by 2.
20/2= 10
-----
-6/2= -3

so now you have k= 10/-3

That's your answer

-6-3(2k+4)=18
-6-6k-12=18
-6k-18=18
-6k=36
k= -6

Always make sure you do any multiplication or division before doing an addition or subtraction.
The terms in this equation are -6, -3, 2k, 4 and 18. The parenthesis around the terms 2k and 4 means you need to multiply these terms by the -3 term.
-6-3(2k+4)=18

-3 * 2k =-6k
-3 * 4 = -12

-6-6k-12=18
Go through and add like terms.
-6 -12=-18

-6k-18=18

add 18 to both sides
-6k-18+18=-6k
18+18=36

-6k=36

divide both sides by -6
-6k/-6=k
36/-6=-6

k= -6

why would a nine year old need to know this i didnt learn it till i was thirteenish

but to explain it u would say multiply the 2k+4 by the -3 so u would get -6k-12and then the equation would look like -6 + -6k-12=18 then add the -6 and -12 to get -18 now the equation looks like -6k + -18= 18
then add the -18 to the 18 to get 36 the equation should look like -6k=36 divide 36 by -6 to get the answer k=-6

Hey there!

Here's the answer.

-6-3(2k+4)=18 --> Write the problem.
-3(2k+4)=24 --> Add 6 on both sides of the equation.
2k+4=-8 --> Divide -3 on both sides of the equation.
2k=-12 --> Subtract 4 on both sides of the equation.
k=-6 Divide 2 on both sides of the equation.

So the answer is k=-6.

Hope it helps!

Multiply out the 3(2k+4):

-6 - 6k - 12 = 18

Add 18 to both sides:

-6k = 36

Divide both by -6:

k = -6

Awfully tough for a 9yo!

Actually it's not FOIL, just distributive, since there is only one set of parentheses. First add 6 to both sides to get rid of the -6:

-3(2k+4) = 24

Now distribute the -3: -6k - 12 = 24

Now add 12 to both sides to get rid of the -12: -6k = 36

Finally divide both sides by -6 to get k alone

To solve an equation is basically to find out the value of an unknown vaiable.In algebra,the values of a,b,c...k,l..,etc. etc. is not fixed and hence they are called variables because their values are liable to change frome problem to problem unlike our old friends 1,2,3,4, etc.
In this problem "k" is the variable and we have to find its value so that the equation is satisfied.
For this we have to put all terms containing k on the left hand side and all constants(numbers which have a fixed value) to the right hand side.
6-3(2k+4)=18
or,6-6k-12=18
or,-6k-6=18
or,-6k-6+6=18+6 [adding +6 to both sides to elliminate the constant"6" from the left hand side]
or,-6k=24
or -6k/-6=24/-6[dividing both sides by -6 so that k is the quotient on the left hand side]
or k= -4 ans

-3(2k+4)=18+6 6 got fren wid 18 as he changes his sign wen he cross the = sign and changes from minus to plus

2k+4=24/-3
2k+4= -8
2k= -8-4
2k= -12
k= -12/2
k= -6

jz remember wen something is multiplying wid something and we wanna take it to other side of = sign it doesnt change sign and it divides tht figure on other side
sign change only wen it is adding up to something or subtarcting so it does opposite on othere side so as to balance the euation

Try teaching her order of operations, if that doesn't work then try showing her the problem being solved but use a number line to help her see what's happening visually.
