The tree may be dead already! There is nothing you can do to SAVE it.
If this woodpecker is ANYTHING like an osprey, the tree is dead. Osprey nest in dead trees only. You will need to look this up online. Since you are a YA user, chances are that you don't need me to post a link to your answer.

The woodpecker is probably after boring beetles. They are a deadly blight on pine trees in the south (don't know much about the north). They weaken the tree from the inside. If you pulled off a piece of bark, you would see trails underneath. When they are bad, you can be alerted by the many broken branches. If you love the tree, you may want to call an arborist. There are sprays to apply in the spring when the babies are active, but your tree may be too big. Ask an arborist.

no. woodpeckers have been pecking holes in trees since the beginning of time. They eat the bugs that they find in the holes and they use the holes to nest in. The tree will mend itself in time if the tree is living. Meanwhile, enjoy watching the beautiful woodpeckers!!

Maybe, but the woodpecker is not the reason why!!!
You have an existing dead wood and insect problem that drew the WOODPECKERS attention, So actually the woodpecker is doing you a favor.
1.He sis eating the bugs that really are doing the damage!
2. His constantly pecking is alerting you that there is a problem, hopefully before it is too late!
Remember......Don't kill the messenger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, and if the woodpecker is still there,I would be surprised. They normally don't stay anywhere for more than a few minutes. You must live in the deep south. It is just eating insects.

no, woodpeckers are looking for insects that will actually do more damage to the tree than the wood pecker ever would.
