Dont be nervous , its all part of being a woman!
You may have too have a pelvic exam , a pap smear is usually done as part of this too check for any nasty bits. And will be done if youve been sexually active.
Try too relax during the exam and ask questions! let them know this is your first exam! Regarding shaving , its personal choice some woman feel more comfortable others dont. Remember shaving will cause itching!! Id take a shower before hand though!
Pelvix examinations and smears shouldnt be painful ,but may be slightly uncomfortable especially if your nervous. Relaxing as silly as it sounds will help! tense muscles down there will only be more uncomfortable!
Good luck and dont stress :)

I know this is a personal question but are you sexually active? If so a pap smear won't be bad at all. I had one before I was sexually active and I wasn't happy because I was not used to even tampons. If they do a pap, it only takes 2 minutes or less. The doctor will put ky jelly on a plastic speculum. A speculum is a 5-6 inch piece of plastic that slides into your vagina as a guide and is used to hold your vagina open. It does not hurt just not comfortable. Then the doctor will take a q tip and swab your cervyx.
This is not painful at all but is uncomfortable if you tense your muscles up when they go to insert the speculum. So just relax. Its not bad and its over fast. The worst is the embarassment of setting there in such a position! Here is a photo of the exam at this link: www.firstvisitivf.org/images/papsmeardiagram.gif

First of all, relax. It's not that bad. First they will do your height, weight, blood pressure, and might or might not draw blood (depends on the doctor). Then you will go back to a room where the nurse will ask you health questions. Be honest, it only hurts you if you lie. Then they will have you take everything off and put on a paper robe. The doctor will come in and will have you lie on your back and put your feet into the stirrups (wear socks, it can get cold). They will have you scoot your bottom all the way to the end of the table so you feel like you are going to fall off. The doctor will insert what is called a speculum into your vagina. It is shaped kind of like a duckbill and it is used to hold your vagina open so the doctor can see inside. If you are a virgin, you can let them know and they can use a special virgin speculum that is much smaller. It will probably feel cold and you might feel some pressure. Then the doctor will insert something that looks kinda like a mascara wand to get a sample of the cells from your cervix. This will pinch a little but should not be painful. He might or might not also use what looks like a big q-tip to get a sample also. Then the doctor will remove the speculum and insert two fingers while pressing on your abdomen to get a feel of your uterus and ovaries. Again, pressure but not pain. Be sure to try and relax your muscles, as this will make it easier. I always look at the ceiling or try to concentrate on something else. Good luck!

You will get a pap smear and probably a breast exam as well. Pap smears are uncomfortable and sometimes hurt a little (like a pinch) but are very quick and easy. I shave, however that's a personal preferance. Just try to relax, be sure to ask any and all questions that you have. A good gyno will explain everything to you before and as he/she is doing it. No one likes to go, but it's a yearly thing that has to be done. I would suggest asking about the HPV vaccine and if you're sexually active, ask about birth control as well. They are there to help with all of that and are your best resource.
Hope this helps.
Good luck!

Don't be nervous! It will all be over before you know it. The most important thing is to relax as much as possible. When they put your feet in the stirrups, just relax all the muscles in the lower half of your body. It doesn't hurt, but it's a little uncomfortable when they put the speculum in...it pinches a bit if you tense up but if you relax you might not feel it at all. Then they take a swab and the dr. checks you with his/her fingers and then it's all over...takes about 60 seconds or less.
As far as shaving, you don't have to. Just wash to avoid feeling embarrassed. They will use Vaseline when they check you, so before you get dressed they'll probably give you some Kleenex or towels to clean off the Vaseline.
The worst part of it is just feeling a little embarrassed about being naked. The exam itself is like falling off a log. Just try to relax as much as possible and everything will be fine.

It's more embarrassing than anything. I'm pretty sure a guy designed the exam table with the stirrups! LOL Anyway, just talk to your gyn when she first comes in the room and ask for the smallest speculum and lots of gel :) She'll understand. Most women do trim before going. Just try to relax during the exam and it will be over in less than 5 minutes :)

A lot of ladies say it's uncomfortable and only hurts a little, But it might not hurt for you. Gynos say, they deal with all kinds of ladies and it's your choice if you want to shave or not, but it doesnt bother them at all, because pubic hair is natural.

The doctor has seen it all - just be freshly showered.
It isn't painful, and there's usually a nurse present. In fact you can ask the nurse who takes your vitals any questions - she'll be able to tell you exactly what to expect.

it doesn't hurt at all... just make sure that they use the smaller tools on you, meaning they make ones big enough for 50 year old women who have pushed out about a million kids (sorry for the picture).
you don't have to shave down there either
good luck hun

I usually shave so that it's smooth and easy. It's just a breeze, but when the doctor first opens the vagina up it might hurt just a little bit.It feels like a little pressure that's all. You'll be fine.
