I think that people who fawn all over you often do it from a place of great insecurity... SO... that same insecurity makes them search for your flaws/weaknesses and then tear you down to what they perceive is a place "below" them...The key is to be able to distinguish between sincere, heart-felt compliments/ admiration and servile flattery... Look at people's attitudes towards famous folks...

Oh man this reminds me of that song "Build me up Buttercup" it goes "why do you build me up, build me up buttercup baby just to bring me down..." anyways, that's not particularly helpful. But I guess the point is, that happens so often there are even songs about it. So it's not just you. Maybe you can learn from the experience and try not to get so much of your self esteem from someone else's opinion next time? I don't want to sound harsh, but it is definitely important to have your opinion of yourself be based on your own ideas and not on what someone else thinks.

People build me up all the time, but instead of them pulling me down, I fall down on my own!

....to me....it is not so much like that....more like....say a friend is really being great....and then all of a sudden...they say or do some really negative things....I know everyone can have a bad day.....and maybe it is too much to ask of friends to be friendly?....
...what makes it even worse...is when they don't even realize or care how bad they were with you...and think they can just keep doing that...be sweet one moment and then a monster the next......that is what I hate.....

Yup, but I never really had that happen to me since elementary. Good thing, considering I would kicking some *** if someone did it to me these days.
However, I am and always will be my toughest critic.

I use to, but I've gotten use it, because my grandmother is great at it. I just know that no matter what a person says, it can only affect me if I believe what they're saying about me.
