My sister n law has a 9 year old Gateway computer with Windows 98 on them. She is ready to upgrade, but has 5 years worth of digital pictures on the computer she dosen't want to lose. I have tried putting their hard drive into my computer and burnning the pictures to CD. But the Gateway HD did not work on my HP Computer. I have tied putting her pictures back onto her camera, so I can transfer them to my computer and burn them. But I couldn't get it to work on their computer (becuase of out of date computer?) So dose anyone have any sugestions that I haven't tried?

Download "PICASA" from google it is free...you need to have a gmail account but they are free too. Once you open picasa it will survey the hard drive and load and sort all the pictures, then follow the instructions on how to upload those pictures into your new web album....once she has the new computer she can leave her photos on the web album or download them to the new computer.....it is all very easy to do....although I may have made it sound difficult.

Your methods are creative, but why not go back to basics? Try copying the files onto a disk, CD-R, DVD-R, USB flash drive, or other disposable media. People have been using portable media as the primary means of copying files from one PC to another for many decades now, it's the tried and true method of file transportation. =D

Many USB jump drives are supported by Windows 98. You could use one of those to transfer the files.

usb flash (or "thumb") drive. you can get a 1G at Walmart for about $20 these days.

but i don't see why your HP computer wouldn't recognize you adding the Gateway hd as a slave. that should have been a straightforward solution w/o having to purchase anything.

Your best bet would be to put a CD burner (and software) on her computer, burn the cd, upgrade and transfer the photos back after upgrade.

Use a usb to usb crossover network cable. Worldstart.com has them for around 18 bucks,(free shipping) Worldstart.com>Software Store,(top header), Cool Gadgets,(in left column), 2nd page-USB toUSB Crossover Network Cable. Connects two computers together to download at USB speeds,(only at USB 1.1 if that's what her old 'puter has, still that's fairly quick)

Did you check the jumper settings on your sister in laws drive to see if it is set to slave first before you setup the drive in the BIOS on your PC...?
