Get good lead pencils, not the cheap walmart kind, and a pencil sharpener. Pens with different sizes and types of tips will help. If you're into coloring, look at Copic markers ;)

Drawing pads of various sizes are a good idea. Possibly an easel and canvas for large projects.

A giant portfolio folder to carry your art around in without it getting smudged.

Keep a good supply of magazines around so you have pictures to practice drawing from.

Charcoal sticks are good but not necessary.

A soft rubber eraser (one that is a bit squishy when you squeeze it, not a hard one that you can buy for cheap).

Hi there! I would definitely suggest taking the class! I am a full time photography student, and I also do portrait and wedding photography as a profession, and it's fantastic! As for the camera, I'd suggest a Canon 450D (or if you're American, it's called an EOS Rebel XSi), or a Nikon D60. Both of these cameras are pretty much the same, and we use them all the time for my class. They perform very well in a studio environment, as well as outdoors! Hope this helps! xx

Get a good sketch book with textured paper, paper with a 'tooth' to it. It should be at least 18x12. Also you'll need charcoal or maybe conte, dry pastels (not the oil type), some good pencils with soft leads, a pink eraser. You also might want a fixer, a spray-on lacquer that will keep a charcoal sketch from smudging. A small piece of sandpaper will come in handy for shaping charcoal and pencil leads. You could take it a step further too and get a pen and ink set. The pen will have interchangeable tips. Good luck.

When I majored in art many years ago, every professor gave us a list of supplies for each class. It is probably still the same today, so just wait until you go to your classes, then get what your professor wants.

Yeah.. teachers are all different so don't blow a bunch of cash until you know what they want you to buy. But for the sake of answering I'd say newsprint, a drawing board with a clip, and some compressed charcoal. Also a little carrying box since charcoal get really messy.

The prof should provide you with what you will need. Ask.
