Save money, time and hassle
The average cost of replacing a bathtub is between $2,000 to $3,000, but you can refinish it in your choice of colors for about one fifth that amount. And with refinishing you don't have the mess, hassle and added expense of demolition, including plumbing, and replacing or repairing the walls and floors around tub which are damaged during removal.
Refinishing also saves time. Refinishing a tub can take four or five hours and you can shower or bathe in it the next day. And you can refinish the other fixtures, countertops and tiles in a matter of days. Replacing a tub can take weeks - and if it's your only bathtub, that can add up to a whole lot of inconvenience.

You can buy stuff at Home Depot to "repaint/refinish" porcelain. Work really great but it is very thick and dries fast so be very careful or get someone with a lot of experience painting to put it on if you want to have it look "factory".
You have to use acid to etch the surface. That stuff is the pits to work with. Very toxic. Very hard to get enough ventilation. I would recommend the acid treatment a couple of times to get a really good adhesion with the finish.

There are companies that will resurface your tub to the color you want. The cost can become very expensive, depending on the style and type of tub you have. I would think it would have to be an older porcelain tub for it to be worth doing instead of replacing it.

I had a tub resurfaced for only $70. It looks fantastic - better than I ever expected - just like new. Great to not have to pay for a replacement! Check your yellow pages for someone to give you an estimate.

You can either have someone come in and paint your tub for you, at an unusually high cost, we did this or, you can go to Home Depot yourself and get the kit for $35.00 and do it yourself.
