Most presidents ARE bad presidents, or at best mediocre.
This is, in part, because America, being such a rich and powerful nation, naturally attracts a great many applicants for the job of running the place, and the competition is fierce.
The idea that competition invariably sends the best man to the fore is proven a lie here, or a misstatement anyway.
The man sent to the fore probably IS the best man... However he is the best man for shaking hands, kissing babies, selling his influence to the highest bidder, and pushing the agenda of a privileged elite with no interest in the great unwashed masses except as subjects for maximum exploitation, and so on. He is NOT necessarily the best man for the job of being president.
It's also in part because people in general are not good for much. They tend to be greedy little two faced scumbags in fact, quite often.
You should be very worried about this, and keep your eyes on them at all times. Who knows what they might be plotting?
This goes double for relatives. Especially parents and children.

This is not a true statement. Reagan was highly regarded throughout his presidency. So was Clinton--if you ignore that Monica Lewinsky situation. Both left office respected for what they accomplished.
This president (GW Bush) has fallen into the trap that cost his father a second term: he's out of touch, except that in his case, it seems he just doesn't care. We need an amendment to the Constitution to allow for recall of presidents at the ballot box before their term of office is up, exclusive of the impeachment process.
In response to ioerr (above): It has often been noted that RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT and BEING THE PRESIDENT involve vastly different skills. Makes you wish we had a Prime Minister instead.

Republican Wilson was not kicked out by Arnold or voted out. He resigned to run for the Senate and lost to I forget Boxer or Feinstien by a narrow margin.
Democrat Gray Davis was removed from office of Govenor after a Vote of No Confidence from the People of Ca. in a Special Election, primarily for his getting hosed by Enron.
Arnold was then elected by a Land Slide in a Special Election...
But to answer your original question....People all want Government to do for them, what they need to do for themselves.
