No. They glue on a plastic nail on the end of your nails. Then they apply the acrylic over it. They can make them however long you want

Just keep in mind when you get Acrylic nails that the glue for the extensions will mess up your nails when you take them off.
If you plan on getting extension they may or may not recommend french tip*white tip extension* if the tip is clear then it is only good if you plan on keeping up with the paint; the french tips will make the extension look more like natural nails*for when you use clear coats, or paint comes off* Since Acrylic dries clear I would recommend the french tips.
If you mess up with the wrong tips, or extension then it takes about 2months for the nail to grow back and you get a do over.
I love Acrilics, but they will need to be filled in every month or so*depending on how fast your nails grow, the fill in goes onto your direct nail. I have taken acrilic off my nail without much fuss.
If your happy with your nail legeth, you can get the acrilic done right onto the nail with no fuss.
Pros:
Nice looking nails
After about 3 days of getting the acrilic you can open coke cans without them popping off,
If they crack it is like five bucks to get it fixed
If you have a habbit like biteing, or picking at your nails, this will stop it.
Cons:
Forget about being able to scratch, acrilic is thick so it takes away a edge, So it takes away a defensive advatage, but I have a 9mm so I can afford to loose that.
Even short extensions can get in the way of typeing, if your used to useing your nails to type then you should be fine.

they put the actual stuff on your real length of nail. but it will be better if u use fake nails instead. that way, when u don't need them, u can simply peel them away. and there's various designs too. :)

when getting your nails done they put a longer length on there but it's really up to how long you want it. if your nails are really short than they wont be that long. it just depends on your length and how long you want itl.

If you have naturally long nails, they can just place it on your actual nail.
If you have short nails then they glue tips to them.
