In Zones 10 and 11, sweet potato vines (http://www.borosales.org/images/Sweet%20Potato.jpg) can be grown as perennials. In Zones 9-1, annual low temperatures drop below 30 degrees, which kills the vine.

If you have a greenhouse or sunroom, you can try to grow rooted cuttings over the winter from your sweet potato vine. I was successful doing this (I'm in Zone 7), then my cats turned over the cuttings and ate them.
