I've always wondered that too...trees had to give their lives in order for there just to be blank pages.

Yes, where i work it is normally to indicate that it's not a mistake nothing is on this page. It's a placeholder because the next page starts a new chapter which you do not usually want to start on the left side of a book. You like the chapters to start on the right page. sometimes you have to leave one blank to do this when you are making a book.
