After several political and military events, the Kingdom of Italy was established in 1861 by Giuseppe Garibaldi. He help put Victor Emmanuel on the throne of this united Italy. The only city not included in this was Rome. Roman citizens voted for union with Italy in 1870 and then 1871 became part of Italy and then later the capital.
