Recently I went to church camp, I am the the religion that the camp was for but I went anyway. An older man was talking about a retreat that he had went on and how a "heavy metal" kid was conformed. The kid was sent on the retreat for a punishment. Once when he was there, he learned part of being a christian was not judging. Then he said "so thats what its all about? why didn't anyone tell me that" apparently, he was upset with people judging him based on his appearence. A currently have no religion, but when people hear I am not christian at camp they tend to think I have no morals, why is that?

It baffles me too! In this day in age, despite the majority of our society being too "busy" for God and religion, we still base of morals and values on the teachings of the religion we were origionally brought up in.
I think we are in the process of our society changing and while half the "old-timers" are still regular church-goers, the other half (the new generations who realize the "inconsistancies" of those same religions) are independant thinkers. And then there are the "inbetween". These are the people who dont go to church like their parents but dont share the same new-age ideas like their children. And ironically, these are probably the most judgemental of people (at least I think). These are the people who dont want to change their beliefs but are being forced to by this gradual metamorphisis in our society. They are scared and when they see the newer generations listening to heavy metal or promoting homosexuality or getting piercings or having children out of wedlock- they immediately want to change us. THey were brought up to think this stuff was evil and they are not ready to know make it a social norm. But like I told my mother- "just go with the flow". Times are forever changing and there is little we can do to stop it. We just have to try to embrace the change and go on with our lives. THat is why I really dont like those religion camps. Sometimes (not all the time) they try to promote hatred and discrimination in a society where it doesnt really need to be. Show me a camp that incorporates new-age thinking with regious belieifs and perhaps I'll go.

Many Christians like to judge others. It makes them feel morally superior. I agree that it's kind of silly to judge somebody on something as superficial as their clothes, but treating someone harshly for a non-crime is just plain wrong! It just goes to show that many Christians could stand to learn a thing or two about morality!

Bottom line with most religions is that you are either for or against them , this imply s there beliefs will be mandatory part of their belief system ...so if you don't believe what they think your standards must be lower .....which of course is rubbish..they maybe or maybe not .....

My view is frankly Keep away from all religions they are all man made and full of rotten meat and maggots... if you see what I mean

Now I did not say don't search and find God ...as far as one is aware God never started any religion

Unfortunately there are no limits to ignorance.Live and let live is still one of the best ways to deal with life, but of course if you put yourself in a situation such as being in a camp with people of a certain way of thinking then of course you are going to stand out. In a case like this you had better to follow the precept of "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". Let common sense be your guide.

I am not the ambassador to Christianity; however I do know that those who have judged you were wrong, but they are only human. I will not preach, but isn't it good to know that as they are looking down their holy noses at you, as we believe, God is not pleased with them either. I guess it all goes back to being human.
I hope that helps.

People will always judge people. No matter what anyone says, it's just human nature. It is not neccessarily a bad thing. Sometimes people judge wrongly, not all people think this of you I'm sure.

good question, i would like to know the answer as well, why does "heavy metal" clash with religion? is it wrong to feel free, to feel liberated and love god on your own? sometimes i see it as religion being big at censorship. why?
