I'd figure it won't cost as much to get a used classic car, especially one that's beat up a bit. That would give me time to work on the car myself, gain some experience along the way, and customize it to my own wants.

However, thinking about this makes me feel worried that it's not a safe idea, due to the lack of safety features back then. I'd also have to learn on a manual, which I have no experience on. Lastly, how would insurance be?

It's just an idea I haven't put too much thought into, so if you all agree it's a bad idea, I wouldn't complain.

I was thinking of a 1970 Pontiac Trans Am. Is that a good idea? The only problem is I have no idea how to really work on cars. I don't want to mess with the mechanical stuff, but I think I might be able to change the seats or something.

If you want to learn about old cars, the way to go is buy a simple Mustang 6 and learn as you go. Plus your investment will grow with the work and $ you put into it.

After giving your question some thought, probably not a good idea at this time.
The older cars are not as user friendly as the new ones. You won't find the air bags, or maybe even seat belts if you get one earlier than 1963. There will be no traction control or ABS brakes. Also the earlier cars did not have fuel injection and a computer to control it, you had a carburetor and a point ignition, that requires maintenance.
Parts failure in an older car will happen more frequently than in newer cars, which just makes sense.
Since you don't want to do mechanical work, then it would be best to get a newer one. Besides that older parts are getting harder to find.

If you do get an old muscle car, and I hope that you do at some point in time, don't make it your primary form of transportation, only use it as a back up, or a fun car to play with on week ends.

That is my view on it, I could be right, and I could be wrong, I don't really know you, so it is just an opinion. good luck either way.

there are lots of '70s and '80s rear wheel drive dodges out there that are cheap , easy to work on and are old enough to have character now . the basic layout is the same as any muscle car and no one will beat you up for practising your bodywork on one. 318's give good mileage and with police suspension and a 5.7L hemi from a newer pickup one would make an awesome budget "sleeper". go have some fun , we all have to start somewhere.

It's easier to work on 60's and 70's cars. Don't worry about
it.
