when i try to start it up, it goes to the dell boot screen, and then keeps repeating that. I go to safe mode and say to boot last good configurations, and i says something failed (like Ndetect?) or something, and then it starts the dell boot up again. please help!

Boot from the xp cd, and do a system repair. This will leave your files intact.

Do the repairing of your system Following are the steps to repair window xp Step 1Insert the Windows XP Installation CD into the disk drive of your computer. Step 2Restart your computer and then press any key on the keyboard to boot up to the Windows XP installation CD. Step 3Press the Enter key after the Windows XP disk locates all of the system files. Step 4Press the F8 key when you see the the Windows license agreement screen. By pressing F8, you are agreeing to the Windows XP license agreement. Step 5Select the hard drive partition that you want to repair using the up and down arrow keys. Step 6Press the R key to begin repairing the Windows XP files. The repairing process could take up to 1 hour to complete. When it finishes, the system will restart, and you can eject the installation CD. if still you are facing a problem then make a backup of your data and format your windows and reinstall the window xp again

You have damaged system files. You will need to insert your Windows XP CD and tell it to repair the current installation.

Sounds like a format and reistall your os
