I have had a Betta Fish for a little under a month, and he's living in a 1 gallon tank (please don't tell me I need a bigger tank, he has a good life in there already with some plants, gravel and castle and it all gets washed out weekly) I live in New York and right now obviously it's summer, so I'm not worrying about my little Betta, but at night we do put on the A/C and he's doing fine, but it can get a little cold in the living room (where he is currently living) also Winter is gonna come around soon, and the Winters here are very cold, but we do put on the heater(for the house), but should I really get a heater for my Betta? If so, is it cheap? The tank is only a 1 gallon. Do I get a 7.5 watt? Please help!

A 7.5 watt heater will work fine in a 1 gallon, just watch the temp. You don't ever want the temp. to fluctuate more than 2 degrees either way or your fish will be stressed and could go into shock. Ideal temp for a betta is 78-82 degrees. If his bowl stays in that temp range, and stays a constant temp that doesn't change, day or night, then you don't need a heater, if there are fluctuations, spend the $8 for a heater. Make sure you have a reliable thermometer, too.

If you want him to be healthy and happy, yes. They're tropical and will freeze without one, especially in the winter. Otherwise they can become lethergic and just lay on the floor of the tank. A filter is also nessasary to keep any fish healthy, they should be in a 5 gallon minimum, not a tiny tank as the common misconception goes. You should only do about 25% water changes once or twice a week, not 100%. That can give them water shock. You should add dechlorinator to the new water, then poor that slowly into the old water in the tank. Onlt feed about 3 pellets a day and take out any uneaten food so it doesn't pollute the water.

yes, I will tell you to get a bigger tank
At least a 2.5 gallon with heater and filter
and since you live in NY you definately will need one, and the temperature is easier to control in a bigger tank then in a small one

Hope that helps
Good luck

From what I've been told, bettas do well in tanks even smaller than yours. The pet we have at work (male betta) is in a small fish bowl (about 2-3 cups of water) and has no heater.

No ! I've had Betta's before.They can live in a goldfish bowl,
without ANY heat or water circulation. You DON'T even need a filter.Just change the water often & just partially.Your Betta will do just fine.I live in Ottawa , Ontario.Canada so, don't worry.

Betas don't need heated water. Only tropical fish do. Don't worry- he'll be fine in the winter months. But, just so you know- Betas don't live all too long in the first place. Though they are pretty...
