The director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre got ideas for the movie from a 1957 murder case involving Wisconsin farmer Ed Gein.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is fiction. However, Leatherface is based on a man in Wisconsin named Ed Gein who, among other things, made lampshades out of human skin. He also was the inspiration for Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs and Norman Bates in Psycho.

the cannibal stuff was real because the real guy sawed there heads into thin slices and ate them. There is a documentary about him and his family just can't remember the name. It was a good one.
