We used to buy our dog food Ol'roy from Walmart. It is a 40 lb bag and only cost about $15 to $20. I have 4 dogs and it lasted us quite awhile. My dogs absolutely loved that food.

I wouldn't recommend giving your dog a whole lot of human scraps. It isn't healthy for them and it can cause problems later if they get to heavy etc.

Good luck with your finances and I hope your future gets brighter soon.

If you need to save money on dog food, go with a Purina product. Dog Chow is not expensive and is recommended by some top guide dog schools (for their released dogs .. not their working dogs). I've also known of show people mixing Purina with a more expensive food. Avoid foods with red dyes. Avoid the cheap store brands. Funny how the recent recall affected the best of the best foods, and the worst of the worst, but your good ole basic Dog Chow was not affected by the recalls.

Have you tried calling your animal shelter and telling them that you need help with feeding your dog? Some of them will help out. You could offer to volunteer some of your time if they will provide food for your dog. You could also ask at a pet store or a grocery store if they have any broken bags or any returned bags you could get at a discount. Walmart has a dogfood called Ol' Roy, I believe. It's pretty cheap, about $12 for 50 pounds, here in Roswell. I can't speak for where you are. The other alternative is to get dog food at the feed store, if you're in an agricultural area. Best wishes.

Some stores have their own "brand of dog food, that is less expensive than the other higher priced brands. Shop at Wal-Mart, if you can.

Buy dry dog food, you can make it moist, by mixing water or a litte juice, from the meat you cook, with it.

If you feed your dog left overs, it will be an additional treat to go with his meal.

I hope your dog doesn't get too hungry and your financies get better.

Woof!

You're not going to like my answer. If you have a small dog you are probably ok to feed it any kind of food, but if your dog is 40 or more pounds, you need to spend the extra money and find a food that lists as its first ingredient meat.
The reason I say this is because I had a large dog and she was fine for the first 10 years or so and then developed a potentially fatal illness. This occurs more often in large dogs especially if they eat dry food whos first ingredient is corn, or rice, or anything like that. They eat until they're full, then the food swells in their stomach, as they are being good dogs and running and playing and laying around, the stomach sways because there's room inside them to do so. Eventually what happens is it flips over and they strangle themselves. My Max was a trooper. It happened to her 2 times and both times she managed to flip it over herself without surgery! It's rare that happens even once. Usually it requires immediate surgery and often it's too late.
I struggled to find something for her, being on a budget myself.
I hope this doesn't happen to you, I wouldn't want it to happen to any animal, its excrutiating pain!
Your dog could be fine for its whole life and never experience any of what mine did, but I felt I should warn you about cheap food. If you do feed it, try putting some water or weak broth(salt isnt good for em either) on the food and letting it swell before feeding it, it worked for me.

Unfortunelty you should prolly spend a little bit of money on the dog food. Example, if you go to wal mart you will find cheap ol'roy food for dogs. They love it, but it's not healthy for them. Think of feeding your dog chips everyday, you wouldn't do that would you? You don't have to get top dollar, but try to find a middle ground.

I suggest the Wal Mart brand, Ol'Roy. It is the best food for the money and it comes in many different types to suit you dog. You can also get it anywhere you live, that's nice so you don't have to change brands.
