Is calling a Republican a Neo-Con Like calling a Democrat a Liberal. To some people the term liberal has become a negative and they prefer to be called progressive. Has the term neo-con become the same thing?

That's a very good comparison. Both groups want to over-use the federal government to promote an unconstitutional agenda.

Go Ron Paul!

In the sense that the Republicans use "liberal" as an insult and the Democrats do the same with "neocon", yes its similar.

Neo-conservatism started when a group of Democrats in the '60s and '70s rejected the Democratic Party because of its turn to the Left and embracing of the "counter-culture" leftist movement of that time. They also thought that the Democratic Party wasnt strong enough on national security. Basically they were liberals who became conservatives.

"Neo" means "new". So "neoconservative" = "new conservative"

The Democratic Party at the time embraced the liberal social movements of the '60s, and the neoconservatives didnt like it. So they began using "liberal" as a sort of bad word or an insult, and said things that we hear often today, along the lines that liberals dont know what they want and dont understand how things work.

Just a little historical context for you.

Same reason Liberals hate Conservatives. Neither side really has any iota of the other. Our wonderful leaders and the spin doctors feed us half truths about the other side. For those who are uneducated or just plain ignorant, it is the only source they have for information. Not gonna bash anyone but I'll use Sen Clinton as example...She was quoted as saying she is adamantly against the illegal aliens on ABC. One month later she was speaking in support of them. Therefore whichever side the Cons want to bash her on they have a field day. I could use Bush as an example on the other..I can quote increased spending on liberal ideals (aids, environment education, African aid etc), but I can bash him on other points, war, oil, NSA, CIA etc. We can look at far right activist (rich and religious) and say all are like that which is as ignorant as seeing a gay pride event and drawing the same conclusion. I won't you to read all of the answers you got then see how much hate and ignorance are coming from the left side as well. The only good answers are those who do not affiliate with a party and who (like myself) expose themselves to information from both sides.

No. The term was initially used to refer to Jews who were Democrats, changed their values and then became conservative. Not all conservatives are Republicans. Not all Democrats are liberal. The term "neo-con" is short for neo-conservative or newly conservative.
Liberals don't want to be called that because they know no one will like them.
Republican candidates are going out of their way to tout their conservative credentials.

Neo Con to Facist as Liberal is to Socialist

NeanderCon is a NeoCon who rejects evolution and therefore did not evolve.

So easy even a NeanderCon can do it.

The term neo-conservative is used to describe a former liberal who espouses political conservatism.

The people who use it in any other manner are just displaying their ignorance. It's like saying "Shut the $h!t up!" To someone who knows how to use a word correctly it sounds horrible.

I think you should call a spade a spade.... What's in a name anyway? If it describes the way you think, why change it.

I haven't heard of a liberal taking offense to the name, nor, a a conservative responding to Neo-con! I think they should be called what they are;

Pre-Perot independent here, and proud of it.
