A bit of both. I got a guitar teacher thats really teaching me some basic stuff, but other then that I'm already making songs writing lyrics and what not. I also do have a guitar book called " Learn To Play The Guitar" by Paul Capone. It teaches strumming patterns, how to read TAB, and a list of guitars that are very popular nowadays. So for my answer? I got lessons, but follow my playing styles after Angus Young, Brain May, Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Van Halen and so on. Plus I learn some stuff from (some) their live performances.

My friend taught me for the first couple of years, now I'm playing on my own. There is so much to be learned from others that you may never figure out on your own, unless you are extremely naturally talented. Even though I haven't had lessons in about 2 years, I'm considering taking them again, because I feel like I can get so much better.

the first couple years taught myself then went to Musicians institute and realized i knew nothing before i went and now i know a lot. If you take lessons make sure to tell the teach you want to learn everything not just technique. Theory is really important . also ear training will save you many times. if lessons are not taken then go get instructional books.

Both. I still want lessons - a qualified teacher can make you a better musician. People thought I was amazing after just a few months of classical-method guitar lessons. Somethings you find out on your own, but you will learn faster if you have a qualified teacher, and you should also learn to avoid bad habits too. Get a qualified teacher.

I have recently started playing guitar and I have found a website @ http://www.video-tabs.com with hundreds of free video lessons teaching you how to play songs and chords. It is by far the best site I have found. They let you request songs and ask questions on each lesson. Check it out. So I guess that means Im teaching myself...at least so far.

Got a book that taught me chords and then learned how to read tabs. That's it. I did have a music background though (play several other instruments) so I had an ear for tuning. That will be the only tough part if you haven't had a musical background, but you will learn it!
