I am planning on going to sleep while listening to different types of music to see how they affect the dream process: Fast, slow, serene/meditative, scary. Assuming I can remember them clearly, what do you guys think my results will be?

Coop 366 - What do you mean "read the same thing?" Do you mean the lyrics of the songs, or any book to keep my mind of the day?

Though not directly, I believe they will incorporated into your dreams. I say not directly as in you'll not hear the music or know the lyrics but if the song is about, lets say dreams, you may dream of water, the archetypal symbol for the unconscious in which you're actually swimming in dreams. Were you to listen to a heartbreaking love song you may perform heart surgery- depending on possible crises in your own love life you may use the defibrillator paddles and shock either yourself or your love interest to sleep.
In short, I believe it will end up being nothing more than Freud's observation of "Day's Residue;" simply lingering disjunct thoughts without any seeming through line or connection to the rest of the dream.

*** In light of Isolating dreams as a phenomenon unto themselves and NOT factoring in such possibilities as the effects of previous days, weeks, months or years we essentially torpedo our conscious mind on its descent into the world of dreams before it can ever objectively relate it to anything in the waking world. Similar to taking the pen and notebook from a detective before they investigate a crime scene, you've preemptively crippled your ability to understand what you're seeking to internalize, analyze and personally benefit from.

To make it equal, before you go to bed clear you mind of everything and I mean the things that happened during the day. Then read the same thing before turning out the light.
If you don't the days events will enter your dream world. I think if you do it this a way you find the music will trigger past events of your life. I would be very interested in what you find.

I doubt it will have much effect as several studies have been done that show people have no retention of hypnosis tapes they listened to while asleep. It might though. Maybe if you're listening to fast music you'll dream you're running or something. That would be cool. Good luck falling asleep while listening to the music!
