If there already in the hole it makes no sense for me throwing myself down into the hole to save them...it just makes them have company down there. I'd try and get help like call 911 or something. If the hole is not too deep then I'd try to pull them out.
If they're about to fall into the hole I'd scream "Look Out" at them...or something to distract them form taking another step and into the hole.

i would not throw myself down a hole for a stranger. what i would do, is try to make sure they saw the hole that they were about to fall in...or at least try to get their attention about it. If they did fall in, then I would dial 911 so they could get out.
