People here are chilled out when it comes to fashion. People in this area are from all parts of the world and have brought along their culture here that they hold quite near and dear to themselves. The native bay arean is not very picky about what others around him/her wear so they haven't set a trend or rather, they have been more flexible and open than people residing in other metropolitan cities around the world. A few years ago, I read somewhere that San Mateo county, which is at the Southern border of San Francisco county is the most diverse county/place in the world. Now I am sure this is true for San Francisco as well. I've noticed that people in SF are more tolerant towards the fact that other people can be different than them. This is one of the reason you don't really see a general fashion/trend among the people residing here. This is just one of the reasons. There might be more.

Meh, I've lived in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. I've seen worse.
But this is particularly amusing in light of the fact that San Francisco has more high-end designer outlets than anywhere else in the West (except for Westside Los Angeles and the Las Vegas Strip, of course).
Ever been down to Montgomery Street?
Or Union Square?
Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Channel, Armani, Versace, D&G, Brioni...they're all there. Not to mention the giant Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macys, and Neiman Marcus department stores. Heck, Barneys is opening a new flagship store in San Francisco next year.
Logically, somebody in San Francisco must be buying all those clothes. If there are no customers, why do they keep opening more stores?

San Francisco is the area where the counter-culture started: Hippies.
Why would they conform to someone creating an artifical fashion trend that's gone in a few months?
The question is why don't other cities have the fortitude to be itself.

San Francisco has its own individual identity of non-conformance. Other cities tend to be very boring in comparison. Enjoy the diversity you won't find elsewhere. I have visited Rome, Paris, Prague...people there are clones of each other. London is more exciting.... almost like San Francisco!

You mean why don't we all look alike and have an identifiable San Francisco style?
We're a city of many different kinds of people, with varying kinds of style, corporate to eclectic. We don't feel the need to conform to anybody else's idea of what is fashionable.

Fashion sense is a matter of opinion. I happen to think you are wrong. Many people I see are right on the pulse of what's in and trendy. Have you ever even been to SF?

Some people there TRY to be anti-mainstream and anti-corporate whatever, although there are a lot of people there that dress nice and pretentious. GAP started in SF and plenty of people there walk around in designer clothes. But yeah a lot of people there TRY not to "conform" or want to be anti-mainstream or whatever. Apparently dressing like a bum sends a message to corporate america in the eyes of some.

Which 'other cities' are you referring to? I happen to think SF is very diverse, and very cool.

I will answer in true SF style:
