If you managed to get inside the middle of the tornado, theoretically it would be calm. However tornadoes have a lot of forward speed so for someone to be inside the "eye" or a tornado they would have to be moving at the exact same velocity as the tornado to stay in the exact middle. A tornado basically is a column of rotating air so at the center it is calm, but sometimes the center area where it is calm can be very small, about a few yards perhaps. In some powerful tornadoes, two vortexes can occur, meaning that there are actually two tornadoes that are like twins and stay in sync right next to each other, but you only see one tornado due to the debris covering the vortex(ieces).
In the movie "Twister" starring Helen Hunt and Bil Paxton, they strap themselves to a water pipe in desperation of escaping the twister, they show Bill and Helen flying up into the twister as high as the strap would let them and they just floated there in the middle of an F5, unharmed. This would never ever happen though. As far as real survivors, I know they exist but I don't know however if they actually saw the vortex(center) and lived through that, because getting to the center requires going through the strongest part, the vortex's "eye wall".
The only reason a tornado doesn't look clear is because of the debris. You cannot actually "see" the tornado itself but rather the debris surrounding it which can vary in color depending on what the tornado is traveling over.
Sincerely

The middle of a tornado would be clear, except for the debris. So no there's no huge space in the middle of a twister, just flying debris. I would know as I have survived a tornado.

There is a clear low pressure core.
IIRC That comes from a monitor that a twister passed over.
"Huge" is a relative term. The 'foot` of a tornado isn't all that big.

In the middle of a tornado there is an empty space. Although, there would probably be some flying debris in it.

its clam and clear... because most of the pressure is in its outer part.
as to the survivors, come to think of it.. how could anyone be at the middle of it (unless you are those artist in the tiwster movie), the wind pressure surrounding it would definitely be throwing you far far away... or, if you see it coming... i bet you would definitely hide your self as fast as you could...

It's like the eye of a hurricane...calm. Afterall, tornados are just inland hurricanes.
