Two years ago I brought a black moor and a orange fantail to go in my two foot tank with two other normal goldfish (I feel I've just abused the number two!). One goldfish was already white with orange eyes and the other had an orange splodge on his back. I now have a white fantail, the goldfish with the splodge has it no more and the black moor has a white chin! I have a three foot tank now with a fluval 305 filter and various other smaller fish mainly two plecs, cory catfish and 4 dainios. They haven't lost their colour I just think it is something that happens the fantail is fine very healthy just white instead of orange. Your goldfish may well stay that way or change again as it gets bigger don't worry!

Check what u r feeding them and then look into the species of goldfish u have. Some of them start out gold and then turn white upon maturity. How old is the fish. They too have a lifespan. Make sure the food u have for them is for GOLDFISH not tropicals. They r totally different.

Cheryl,
I did some research on this phenomenon.
I have 50 Comets in my outdoor pond and one of them turned completely white. It has nothing to do with lighting, food, etc. It has to do with genetics. Remember that Comets are breed down from Carps. This is a genetic "throw back" as they call it.
The only thing you have to be careful with is too much sunlight and usually this is not a problem for the person that has these fish inside in an aquarium. If they are outside as mine are, they can suffer from sunburn, just like a human.
The fish is NOT sick. It REALLY is genetic's that are involved here....And yes, goldfish can change color at any time in their lives and do change as they age. The point of my answer is to let you know that your fish is NOT sick, just because it is white.

You know what? I'm almost 100% it's the effect of his age. I've had almost 27 goldfish in my life and they have all grown old and changed their scale colour into a more faded shade. Don't worry!

In an effort to create ever new and different types of fish, goldfish are being constantly specially and specifically bred and interbred to produce certain body shapes and colorings. Doing so mutates their genes in very unusual ways and these new mutations may take several generations to take hold or may never take hold at all. If the fish cannot hold onto the new colors it was born with pursuant to these genetically altered breeding techniques, they will revert back to more standard, dominant colors. Color changes in goldfish is nothing to worry about.
