When I donated last week at the Salvation Army, several employees came over and started going through the boxes. A couple said something like "I want that!" and grabbed several items, taking them inside. Another employee saw me watching and said "it's one of the perks, we get first pick for free". Why do these employees think that stealing is okay. Especially from a charity? Is this common?

Yes, it happens here in Spain as well. Funnily enough also at the salvation Army shop. I refuse to donate anything anymore. I regularly see one of the workers there driving home with her car loaded up. This is stealing and it goes against the spirit of the concept of donating items for a good cause. Shame on them.

I don't think I would donate to that particular store anymore. I volunteered in a non-profit thrift store and we sorted mdse. and put it out on the floor, and if we wanted to buy something, we went after our shift. I suppose there were some that held back stuff for themselves, but that's really not cool! It was awful, too, to watch the 'richer' volunteers throw away an item of clothing, like jeans, with a little hole, or they thought were outdated, and I'm standing there thinking, I'd buy that! Wouldn't it make more sense that 'rejects' be put aside and allow people to take for free?

my cousin used to work for the Salvation Army, she always had really nice clothes. She got a beautiful leather jacket, she paid 5 cents for it. Yes its true that the employees get first dibs but most places they have to pay a minimum of 5-25 cents. My cousin said it was because they were making a little bit below the minimum wage.

WOW!!! That is a surprise to me. I would think that they might have first choice on items, but that they would have to pay for them. I would contact the Salvation Army store you were at and ask to speak with the manager about the situation. That is not right, if it is happening.

Employees here make around $7.50 an hour.
