I have no idea on how you would get a book published. Can anybody give me some pointers?

You cannot send unsolicited manuscripts to agents, or publishers.

You need a Literary Agent.

Submitting queries to agents and publishers is a good way to go, and as someone else already answered, you can find many of these in The Writers Market.

I would also recommend that you investigate writing competitions. I finally got published by winning the 2005 "Malice Domestic" competition run by St. Martin's Press, so if you are writing murder mysteries you might consider submitting to that (there are three of these listed at http://www.minotaurbooks.com/competitions.html)

As a word of caution, there are some phony contests out there, so I would go with the ones run by name publishers or universities.

www.agentquery.com

This is the best source for finding a literary agent (which you will need if you're going to try and get published.) You will send what are called queries to them. If they are interested, they'll request your manuscript or a portion of it.

Good luck.

Buy the latest edition of Writer's Market, or check it out from your local library.
