Its a Kenmore machine, purchased in 2000. It is a top loader. There is no smell of burning. I don't see a belt, which was my first idea, in the parts list. Any ideas and if so, do you think its worth having it repaired?

I would agree that it is most likely a coupling between the motor and transmission that has broken. If you or a friend has some mechanical aptitude it isn't too difficult to change. One of the two following web sites might help you. ...Good Luck...

Most washing machines use belts just like vacuums and dryers. If it does not have a belt, check the drive cogs. These are located beneath the agitator itself. There should be a cap that is removable on the top of the agitator with a nut inside. If you can get the nut off, which will probably require a socket, ratchet, and an extension, pull up the agitator and you shoul see the cogs. Ours woud not spin or agitate and that was our problem.

If the motor runs, but doesnt spin or wash, then the coupling is broken, but it wont make a burning smell. If its so old that it has a belt, then buy a new machine. You can tell by looking to see if there is an access panel in the back.

it could be caused by a few different things.. relay switches, the dial/timer, the motor itself. A simple voltage/ohm meter (10$) can show where the problem is, start with the motor and back track.

and I could be completely wrong

if calling a repairman is your solution, I would definetly consider a new washer,

If you can hear the motor but there is no tub action you have a bad coupling/belt. If nothing at all happens it could be the timer switch or more likely the door safety switch at fault.

It's probably the drive coupling, which is located between the motor & transmission. You can tip the washer back to view it.

Could be the motor...some machines actually have two, and one is for the agitator.....
