I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, and a short review of each book.
Good scifi
Just about anything by Isaac Asimov, but especially:
..I, Robot (mandatory scifi, woman is main character)
..The Elijah Baley murder mysteries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Baley - last book has some explicit adult content, but all excellent as scifi and as mysteries
..The Foundation series
Jules Verne - considered scifi in its day, seems more like adventure now, but great no matter what you call it - and free online
..Journey to the Center of the Earth
..20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
..Mysterious Island (sequel to 20,000)
..Around the World in 80 Days (not really scifi, but great!)
H G Wells - also free online
..War of the Worlds
..The Time Machine
..The Invisible Man
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - I was not real impressed with the sequels, but this one is great
Andre Norton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibliography_of_Andre_Norton
..2250 AD (also called Star Man's Son)
..The Crosstime series
..Judgment on Janus (sequel not so good)
..Zero Stone series
..Solar Queen series
..Central Control series
I hope this helps.

You should check out Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini, or Stardust by Neil Gaiman. If you saw the movie Eragon and thought it was kind of lame the book is one hundred times better, the movie left out a lot of important parts of the book. The second book of the trilogy, Eldest is really good, too! I love Harry Potter books and I think these are just as good, they are easy to read and hard to put down once you start reading them! The Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks is also really great!

Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. They are about vampires, and, well, something else "magical", but I won't ruin it for you.
I also heard the J.K. Rowling is writing 2 new books.

i'd try Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, if you're into aliens and such. its about a boy who has to go into military training to defeat the "buggers" (the aliens) from invading earth. its a really good book and it could stand alone on its own, otherwise you can read the rest of the Ender Wiggins series.

I never did like sci-fi.
But the books I always fly through are Tamora Pierce - especially her 'Tortall' series.
