I have always been scared to put my fans on the highest setting, because I am scared they will fall and injure or kill me. Am I just being paranoid, or is this possible?

Lol i dunno but if it's raining outside don't hang bras on a fan to dry and then turn it on coz they go flying off and are actually quite powerful when flung like that :-P

Yes they can. This is why, if installed properly, they will have a safety cord attached so if they do come loose the cord will "grab it" before it does too much damage.

They key is to make sure that you install with all the correct parts, it in an approved ceiling with a proper beam. If you do, it won't ever come loose because the screws it "should" be put in with are like 4 inches long.

And no...an adult can't get killed but you can get hurt...and what about a child or baby? Mythbusters won't dare test that one!

It can happen depending on how tough and how much weight your ceiling can hold, because that has happend to my friend before because her house was old and didnt hold fan really well and it ripped right out of the celiing ,but i think you'll be fine i dont think that kind of thing happens much.

If they were installed properly , there should be no problem. If the fan is wiggeling or moving weird, it is out of balance and needs some counter weights to make it spin smooth.I have 4 ceiling fans in my house and I have no problem with them.

Haha, I'm paranoid about that, too. Nonetheless, I have mine on the highest setting all the time (it's HOT as H-E-double hockey sticks here).

I have installed many ceiling fans. They are very safe. screws and brackets hold them up in place. Over time, some fans become slightly unblanced, and should be adjusted.

By just turning it up like that, it shouldn't detach and fall. That's what they're made for.
