Will the international version of final fantasy 10 work on an american version of ps2?

I want to get the international version of final fantasy 10 and I heard that it will only work on the japan version of the ps2 is that true if so where can I get one? Please and thank you for your help.

If it is a Japanese copy of the game, it will not play on an American PS2. European games also will not play on an American PS2. You need a good mod chip such as a DMS4 Pro, Crystal Chip V2.0 or Matrix Infinity green dot.
