You can try paying Google to advertise your site upon certain keyword searches (http://www.google.com/intl/en/ads/).
You should also make sure that your site is actually on the Google database. (http://www.google.com/intl/en/submit_content.html)
Other than that, just make sure your site is clean and is something people would actually want to go to.

All depends on what you mean by the "best" way. If you want to ensure that your site will always be at the top and/or shown as a "sponsored" link then you can page the search engine to place your site high.
The second alternative is to do the work to help place your site as high in the search engine rankings as possible. For instance I am an adsense consultant and my blog is on page one of Google's search engine results for "adsense consultant" and "adsense consulting" - 2 terms that I most want to be associated with. Now I managed to accomplish being on page one of google's search engine because I work (and constantly work) on the content of my blog.
You are going to have to do the same thing for your site.
Decide what keywords you want to be associated with your site and see where your site ranks. If your site's rank doesn't satisfy you then you have to start working on the contents of your site - in other words incorporate those keywords into your site.
There are also tactics that you can use to view your competitors' sites and rank above them.
But there is one thing that you will have to understand and that is that the Internet is constanly being updated - more sites are coming online, sites have been cancelled....all different things to make your site's rank go up or down.
And that means that you constantly have to work on your site and constantly monitor your search engine rankings.

Google finds websites in order of popularity. This means that the more websites there are that link to yours, the higher yours will appear on the results list.
It might help to add a link to your website to each question you ask and answer in yahoo. Just hypothetical, I'm not actually suggesting you do that.
