I actually have two questions.
1) Where in Chicago would I go if I wanted to go to a concentrated area of clubs/bars?
2) Why does everything in Chicago's Loop close at 6pm and stay closed throughout the weekend?

I don't know, I guess I'm just used to Minneapolis where 1 in 5 people live downtown in condos and everything is open til at least 9 & 7 days a week, and all the clubs are right on 1st ave which are open til 2 or 3 am.

I used to live right in the Chicago loop and hated the lack of a night scene. Everything does close before 8 down there. The real night life happens outside the loop. Others mentioned some areas, but I'll add one more. Off the Damon stop on the blue line has a fun strip of bars. you should definitely check it out.

I moved into Lincoln Park area around Fullerton/ Diversey/ Belmont where Marc mentioned before. There are many bars in this area worth checking out, but if I was only here for a couple nights I would head over to Damon before anywhere else. Just get on the blue line and go to Damon, get off the train and have a blast! it's as easy as that.

1) Try Wicker Park. You can't spit without hitting a bar or club. Lots of them have live music and with that many bars or clubs in the area, if you strike out at one, there's always another right next door.

2) everything doesnt' close at 6 in the loop, but most do becuase it's mostly office workers who are there. they may have a drink after work, but after that they go home. So there's no reason for all of the bars to stay open. A few stay open to catch the theater crowd, but for the most part, the others close up early since everyone is commuting back hom. And they stay closed on the weekend for the same reason: if no one is working in the offices, what's the point of opening up shop?

1) Rush Street; Milwaukee Avenue around Wicker Park, or Division Street in the same area; Broadway around Diversey up to about Belmont; Lincoln Avenue around Fullerton.

2) The Loop is mainly office workers - there's a few bars that stay open, but since a lot of the people who work in the Loop live in areas like Division Street, Wicker Park, Lincoln Avenue, etc. that's where the bars stay open later.
