If we get t-mobile hotspot@home, we'd drop our landline, and currently we get at&t internet through the landline, so how do you get broadband internet or anything better without a landline???

Cable Modem, check your area to see who handles your cable. Time Warner, Cox, etc....

Where you live determines what your options are. I live in the city and use Verizon FIOS (fiber optics kick @ss!), but my parents only have one choice for an ISP -- their local phone company which charges $60/month plus you're required to subscribe to basic phone service. I have a friend here in the city who also subscribes to DSL but his phone company (Qwest) does not require him to purchase phone service. So in the end it just depends on the competiton/how much your phone company wants to screw you.

PS: Investigate the cost of cable broadband -- Satellite broadband is about $50/month but you'll have higher latency than DSL.

What about cable?

In fact what you're asking for is DSL. Broadband is misuse sometimes to refer to DSL, but it refers to the system used in cable. It uses a broad band of frequencies to transmit, many channels at the same time.
DSL over phone lines is a half duplex serial link.

if your cable company offers internet you can go through them, but to get DSL based service you need a landline telephone line.
