One of the big differences I've seen over the years is that Windows operating systems need to get re-booted every so often. On the Unix machines a re-boot is not really an issue. At my last place of work we had a Unix server that hadn't had a re-boot for 493 days, and the only reason we needed to re-boot it was because one of the hardware devices had to be replaced. This is just one of the things Unix does better.
