According to a documentary I saw about them on the History Channel, tradition. It didn't start out as a racist organization, just an exclusive and secret one. Kinda like the Stone Cutters from The Simpsons, except the Klan wore hoods to remain even more secret. Then later they morphed into the racist organization we know today.

Well the cones and such are one for identity purposes.....makes them seem more mysterious i suppose. But its also symbolism to be more threatening...if your getting hurt or killed by someone and you cant see their face....its worse than if you can and that way you cant trace it back to their real lives. Also the KKK is pretty much a joke these days lol that arent like they used to be ......they are like the modern Nazis just a crazy freakshow trying to relive things long since passed.
