There are milestones that guarantee a place among the best, like 300 victories, 3000 K (Blyleven will make it sooner than later), 500 HR, 3000 hits.
So, here are a few ones.
Clemens. The winningest pitcher alive, 7 Cy Young awards, 2nd all time in K's.
Greg Maddux. Should pass Clemens as the winningest pitcher alive and why not, Christy Matthewson as the third all time in victories. Best control ever in his prime. Add 16 Gold Glover awards.
Big Unit. 3rd all time in K's, Best K/IP ever.
Ken Griffey. 4 HR titles, 9 Gold Glove awards. Arguably the best hitter in the 90s.
Pudge Rodriguez. Lifetime BA over .300, 11 Gold Gloves, 6 Silver Slugers, 14 All Star games. As a catcher, the best combination ofensively/defensively.
Mike Piazza. Even though he was defensively mediocre, he is the best offensive catcher ever. 10 Silver sluggers, 12 All star games. 1997 must be the best offensive season by a catcher: .362, 40 HR, 124 RBI, 201 hits.
A-Rod. 5 HR titles, 2 MVP awards, 8 Silver Sluggers, 11 All star games...and counting.
Pedro Martinez. Dominated both leagues. At 35 his lifetime ERA is below 3.00 and has less than 100 losses. Winning % best ever among pitchers with more than 110 victories and played after the "dead ball era". His K/BB ratio is the 2nd best among pitchers who played after 1900, the pitcher who has best one is...
Curt Schilling. Best K/BB ratio, another member of the 3000 K club. How to forget his 2004 playoff/WS performance with one leg, with his sock soaked on blood.
Tom Glavine. The last member of the 300 win club in a long time.
John Smoltz. Dominant as a closer or as a starter. Only pitcher who led the league in wins, Ks and saves in different seasons. He'll join the 3000 K club soon.
Craig Biggio. 3000 hits, 7 all star games, 4 gold gloves and 5 silver sluggers.
I don't mention Ichiro because a player must play 10 seasons to be eligible, so Ichiro would not make it if he retired today.
