The brain is not completely randomized, that plus the fact that many children are taught to do things with their right hand first. But here's a little food for thought as well...

If flavors seem to be randomized also then why do more people prefer pepperoni on their pizza than any other topping?

If chocolate releases endorphins in the brain that make you happy, then why do some people not like chocolate?

I thought it had to do with lobe dominance...? When I was young, I was left-handed, but when I got to the 1st Gr., I was forced to switch to use the right hand. My speech went to pieces; I stuttered, couldn't "memorize" the darn "whole word" system that was being taught then and was a general mess!! I flunked 1st Gr and finally got the hang of memorizing the words the second year and went on through school and college. Later, as a young adult, I got to live in Japan--found that their children's books were in Hiragana native characters; their books started from the back of our books; the characters went from RIGHT to Left and from TOP, down!!! This "fit" my backwardness, somehow, and I was able to heal my reading disability through reading Japanese! I later went to UC Berkeley for a teaching credential and then later got an MA and Ed Specialist in Guidance and Counseling. Worked for 21 yrs w/very troubled adolescents--many of whom had communication difficulties!

It's also influenced by enviornment (ie; right handed desks at school) and well meaning parents (putting the crayon in the child's right hand).

Its not random, its genetically inherited, and the right-handed gene is the dominant gene. Therefore, you have to have the right conditions to be a "lefty", and those conditions are uncommon, which is why "lefty's" are less common.
