The Golden Nugget is a very nice 4 star hotel and if you can pick up a special $49-$69 room rate then it's a heck of a deal.

My favorite downtown is Main Street Station
http://www.mainstreetcasino.com >Sunday through Thursday you can find $35 rates(sometimes)
If you're a player, MSS is as good as it gets. I play about 5hrs of quarter VP per day(on average) and they comp everything(room/food/booze) - They also have the best value buffet in all of LV - A really nice brew pub(Triple 7), where they serve great steaks for bargain prices($7 prime rib dinner) - The best "moderate" price steakhouse in LV the Pullman Grille. If you want a room with a nice view, ask for 911, that should be easy to remember.

The Tower rooms at the El Cortez are HUGE and IMO very nice.

Even the Pavilion room(2 queens) was better than I expected
Room 815 in the tower has a nice view of the strip.

The best hotel is the Golden Nugget. However the best for the money if you can get in is El Cortez. It is just off of Fremont strip an easy walk. The rooms are bigger and very nice. If you want go to cheapovegas.com and they will give you a nice write up on every hotel in the area. Some people say that you group the hotels in the area in 4 groups

Golden Nugget in a group by itself

El Cortez just below the Nugget nicer rooms but no pool and the casino is not as nice but better games

Main Street - Free mount - Four Queens and the California, Las Vegas Club in the next group

Then the others

One last thing downtown is not the strip do not expect the same or you will be upset. I love downtown but it has a different charm to it

For the money the only hotel in the Fremont Street area is the Golden Nugget. The nugget wouldn't be out of place on the Strip. Its about the same quality as Treasure Island, planet Hollywood or Monte Carlo.

We thought Binions Fremont was the best for the money and the Gold Nugget was the best on Fremont Street.

I'll make it unanymous...the Golden Nugget. Not only is it a 4 Star hotel, but they've just finished some remodeling and finished the new pool with the water slide that goes through the shark tank...NO JOKE!
