taking a road trip from sacramento to yellowstone national park and then to schaumburg from there. Any ideas on what are MUST see places to stop. and what about the best places to spend the night.

You could visit Badlands National Park, from "Dances with Wolves" fame, also Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Wind River Mtns (awesomely beautfiul) of Wyoming and finally Teton National Park.
I have been to them all and they are well worth it.
