When I come to a stop, my car will put and sort of sputter. I begin to think that it will go out on me so I keep my foot on the accelerator to prevent that.

Once I get going again, I press on the gas extremely hard (where the RPMs are on about 4 or 5) but it takes me forever to gain speed.

The last time I drove it, it did this again and when I came to a stop in the parking lot, the car began to smoke from under the hood and the smell of gasoline was faint.

What's happening??

the only thing that all your problems have i common possibly the exhaust is clogged(Catalytic Converter).Your engine is a fancy air pump(air in,air out), if air has a hard time getting out it will back up into the engine causing the sputtering and lack of power.

You might have multipule problems:
for the sputtering
Engine misfiring, sensor failure or timing problem.

for the lack of acceleration
possible Internal transmission problem

Here are two things ot do before jumping into any repairs:

1. Have the fuel pressure checked. They do this under the hood and it takes only a minute or two.

2. Have the throttle body cleaned. Sludge collects on the engine side of the throttle body "flap" or plate and it'll bog the motor down at idle when it restricts air flow.

3. Make sure the air filter is relatively clean and not so dirty or plugged up that the engine can't breathe.

4. Check your oil level.

If all of these things fail to produce suspicious results then you might need an engine diagnostic to check the over all condition of the sensors and engine condition.

Good Luck!

This helps when you give us what year and make the car is. If its fuel injected the fuel injectors are probly shot, next fuel filter (a probable cause).

Sounds like you need a major tune-up, your fuel filter might be clogged also, have them change that too when you get the tune-up
