Hello
Where I live there are 2 computers, my parents computer and my laptop. For the past 3 weeks the wireless box (which is connected to my parents computer and is enabling my laptops wireless adaptor) has been having problems even though its been working perfectly before. The internet it slow all the time and times out and we have even had tried to reinstall our broadband connection which even though it works is also slow.
As my brother doesnt have a computer he uses my parents one and due to his excesive amount of downloads he has managed to download over 400mb worth of files from downloaded programs like Limewire and Meccora network (which take up summat like 27,000mb each) Could these programs and all the files be slowing things down and casuing wireless problems.

thanks

yes it definately can. shut his PC off and try it. Also make sure the router is secure so you don't have neighbors on it as well

Hi Michael:

From what you describe it sounds most likely that your wireless router is being used outside of your home by people you don't intend to share it with.

Log into the router:
http://192.168.1.1

Username: admin
password: admin (default)
Set the Password to something long and hard to remember. Write it down. Either tape that to the bottom of the router, or use your p-touch/labeler to label the password to the router itself.

Next step:
In the wireless Security section ENABLE WPA2. Set a long password again. Make a label for that password too and tape it to the bottom of the router.
Now go to each computer in the house and set the WPA2 password to match what you set in the router.
If you have a wireless machine that can't use WPA2, set the router and all devices to WPA instead. AVOID WEP, as it is Easy to break into.

A few extra steps:
DISABLE the SSID broadcast feature UNLESS you have a wireless printer.
ENABLE the filter wireless connection by MAC address and then enter each MAC address of all your systems into the MAC Address Table of your router. Set the option to ONLY ALLOW computers to connect wirelessly from the following MAC Addresses. Turn the wireless router firewall ON.

Final security measure:
In the DHCP server section of the wireless router, only allow a range of IPs that allows one IP per system you have.
For Example if you have 3 computers, 2 laptops and 2 wireless printers.
Set the range to 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.106
This means only 6 systems can get IP assignments from the DHCP server and if you have enabled the MAC address filter from the earlier steps, you are as secure as is currently possible.

You should also verify each system in your house has windows firewall or better enabled and install Windows Defender on each system too.

Remember that everyone connected is sharing the upload and download speed of your ISP. So if your brother is constantly downloading things it will slow your connection. The other thing is if he is using Limewire or other torrent stuff they sometimes use your machine to download stuff so there is another pull coming in that could be slowing network performance. Try getting everyone off and trying one machine. If it works perfectly then put another machine on. Then the last test is to have your brother on while downloading or uploading something and see the response. You will notice drop off in downloading or performance. If your broadband continues to be dropped though it could be from high traffic and not necessarily your boradband modem. I will still have your ISP check it though.

Most definitely it is the peer to peer sh!t.

Limewire and others share your internet so even when you're not downloading, others are using your internet to achive their downloads...its just how it works. Configure limewire to use a fraction of your bandwidth so that some is still available for other uers on your network (you).

If your brother doesn't cooperate you can bring it to your parents attention the severe threat using P2P can pose to their financial situation (opening them up to lawsuits, etc)

yes, the downloading of your brother is definitely slowing everything down. if he is currently downloading and your are browsing, he is pretty much using most of the resources of your internet speed.

also you might want to scan for viruses in your parents PC coz it might have been infected. and it could be that the virus is also sending information outside your network like a spyware ( which also could slow your internet).
