I am having an issue with a tree tree in my backyard. The tree is very nice and rather large, and I believe there is some sort of insect issue with the tree. There are nests that are taking over limbs of the tree with a web like form around the leaves and it is causing the leaves and even the branch to die. I have spotted what I believe are caterpillars around the tree, but I am unsure. Also, a lot of the leaves are also becoming very spotty and holey.

I am unsure of the type of tree but it is at least 40 years old and I can send pictures of the tree and the webs and insects I have seen.

Those are webworms. Common, and will not kill the tree if managed. Cut off the branches if you can and burn the web.
If you cannot remove them - spray them with Sevin or other insecticide found at the hardware store.
Get as many of the webs as you can - the tree should be fine - next year, catch them early.

Web Worms.
Rip open the webs or remove the limb.
Professional companies like TruGreen or Scotts can spray the trees with execllent results, but at least 2 apps are required.
Cost is about $125 for both apps, and it works!!!

There are a number of different butterlies and moths whose caterpillars build tents on tree branches. Although unsightly, they seldom cause permanent damage to the tree.

If you can reach the tents you can try poking a stick to open them up. Once open, local birds will come in to eat the caterpillars.
