One of the ancient greek playwrights thought that wearing a mask (as the actors did in those days) was one of the most dangerous things you could do - people became less inhibited and displayed more disruptive personality traits.
In other words, the perceived anonymity of mask-wearing makes the person feel freer to act in a way they normally would be to shy, or held back by social mores, to act.
These days, the anonymity of the internet provides the same function. People can be agressive or sexual towards others on the internet in a way they would never be if face-to-face with that person.
Perhaps masks do not hide one's real personality, but reveal it in its animalistic, base, uncensored entirety.

The meaning of the ascendant relates to the meaning given to the first house "the rising sign" the moment when the baby first breathes which is its beginning as an independent identity. The "persona" the "mask", or socialized self with a particular style of self -presentation. Just as planets ascending above this point are visible, so this point represents the birth of appearance of the individual in the world. It also has to do with the image we project on our self, the impression we make on others, the way we take action in the world and the lasting effect we have in our invironement. As a Gemini with an Aries ascendant, I can honestly tell you that I don't know exactly who I am sometimes. Just like having a multiple identities, ha ha ha.

I think a lot of that depends upon how a small child perceived what their mothers' think of them! And ACT toward them! If the mother is harried, pre-occupied with demands of the house and family and maybe doesn't have the back-up of a loving husband, the children may perceive that they themselves are defective and try very hard to become what they think that their mothers want!!! That is, until adulthood and we start to smoother under those masks! I believe that today's children are more able to be themselves with a current acceptance of childhood. But, it still depends upon what the mother is going through during those formative years!

I think its because their afraid. Afraid of people not likeing them for them. And they think that they have to be what everyone wants to them to be. When the truth is they don't. You shouldn't be scared to show your true self, because the truth is some people are going to like you and some are not.. And they way I figure it the ones who don't like you for you, missed out on someone great.

We are taught from childhood to hide our personalities. Don't do this, don't do that, smile now, be sweet, etc. etc. you see?
