I pay mine $300.00 a month for a small room/small bathroom - I don't use much water, electricity, i'm never home - I don't have any privacy at all though so it's like it's not my room. Yes I know that I could rent an apartment for 400-500 with utilities included, however, my parents are so controlling that if I move out, they'll never speak to me again. Anyways, that's a different subject - I was just wondering how much is a decent amount to pay rent when you still live at home...

Oh yeah,
They don't pay for me to go to college
or any of my bills - I'm 100% FINANCIALLY OWN MY OWN - in fact, they're always asking ME to lend them money and I NEVER ask them - I always buy my own food/necessities, as well

I am a college student commuting from home; my parents help me with my tutition. I pay $300 a month, as well. This can be considered rent money or simply a way to show them my appreciation. Parents are not required to let us live with them after the age of 18. So why not thank them by contributing to their expenses?

My son lives with me, along with his fiance and baby, and they pay $300 a month plus 1/3 of the other expenses. They are very grateful they have a place to stay with a free babysitter and no other worries. My two grandsons are also staying here during the school year, and they pay one hour work a day, for room and board.
So the question really is, how much does it cost for you to let them control you? If you are financially able, then apparently it's worth $300 a month. If they raised it to $350, would you still let them control you? (How about $400)
Only you can decide what it's worth to give up, and when you reach the end point, move.

I am 28 and just recently moved out of my parents back in May of this year. From the time I graduated college in 2002 till this year, the only thing my parents asked me to pay for was the electric bill which varied depending on the season. It went from 50.00 in the summer to over 300.00 in the winter. I had no complaints and it did teach me responsibility. especiaslly now since I bought my own house and it costs a lot more then just the electric bill.

My son lives at home. He pays $100 a month. That helps me out with eletric, gas, and food. He has his privace but there are still rules in my home that he needs to abide by for example..no bringing girls home who want to spend the night. He is in school full-time and works too.
I don't control him at all. He is old enough to know right from wrong and it is time for him to spread his wings a little. It be in your best interest to find a couple of friends that you could split rent with.
At some point your folks have to realize that you will move out. If you're not happy there and you are working and attending school why not make it easier on your self. They may come to appreciate you more and how you have contributed to the household.

I charged my daughter $250.00 per month for room and board starting two months after she began working full time after graduating from college. She complained about it often until she bought her own condo a year ago and when I gave her almost $12000.00 and told her that I never spent one dime of her rent money but put it into a separate bank account. I told her this at her condo closing and everyone in the room's mouth dropped open. We parents dont do it always because we need the money, it's to teach responsibility. If she would have moved out prior to that - it would have been ok with me, so I dont understand your parents charging you and being mad if you leave. Do your parents need the money?

My son is living at home and I do not charge him rent or ask his to pay for anything unless he buys us a meal occasionally , he works and is going to college and is trying to do the best that he can , and I am glad to help him with what ever I can. I do this because he is a working hard and I am proud of him and because this is the way my parents helped me when I was growing up.
