2x + (1/3) = -6
First step is to get like terms on each side of the equal sign. Meaning my goal is to get all numbers on one side and all letters on the other. I will start by subtracting 1/3 from the left. If I do it on the left I need to do it on the right also. I subtract b/c 1/3 is positive.
2x + (1/3) = -6
-(1/3) ......-(1/3)
so I am left with
2x + 0 = - 6 - (1/3) before I do anything else, I will combine my like terms on the right side. This means I will need to do a few steps.
-6 we can change to make it look different but not change the value. I will put a 1 under -6 to make it look like a fraction (1 can be put under ANY number to make it look like a fraction with out changing its value)
(-6/1) Now I need to get it to have a denominator of 3 (b/c 1/3 has a denominator of 3) but I don't want to change its value. I am going to multiply the whole fraction by (3/3) (this is equal to one so it doesn't change our value and it gives us the denominator we need....
-6 * 3
---------
1 * 3
(-18/3)
Now we have
2x = (-18/3) - (1/3) I am going to combine like terms
2x = -21/3
Now I isolate the x by dividng the 2 to cancel it out. But if I do it to one side I HAVE to do it to the other....
2x = (-21/3)
-----------------
2
x = (-21/3)/2
x = -(21/3*2) why? b/c it is the same as saying (-21/3)* (1/2) which would be
-21 * 1
---------
3 * 2
x = -21/6
If you can not reduce then you are done. Can you reduce this fraction? Well, if they have any common factors then yes you can. The common factor they share is 3
x = -7/2

2x+1/3=-6
=>3* 2x+3*1/3=3*-6......X by LCM
=> 6x + 1 = -18
=> 6x = -19
=> x = -19/6
=> x = - 3 1/6

first subtract 1/3 which gives u -6 and 1/3 which is -19/3 so you now have 2x= -19/3 then you divide by 2 which gives you -19/3 x 1/2 which gives you -19/6

Subtract 1/3 from each side:
2x = -6 - 1/3
2x = -18/3 - 1/3
2x = -19/3
divide both sides by 2:
x= -19/6
x=-3 1/6

2x + 1/3 = -6
2x + 1/3 - 1/3 = -6 - 1/3
2x + 0 = -18/3 - 1/3 = -(18/3 + 1/3) = -19/3
2x/2 = -19/3/2
x = -19/6
