I'm not referring to the fact that I think someone may be talking about me, I hate the sound of people whispering. I was in the library and people were whispering I would rather they had talked in a normal voice I would have found it less disturbing. I even hate whispering on TV or films. Anyone else and any theories why this is?

I understand the argument comparing whispering to people talking behind your back, but it is actually the sound of whispering that annoys me. It doesn't matter if I can hear what is being whispered.

It most likely because they are deliberately keeping you from being able to know what they are talking about. In general, we like to know what is going on around us, and not being able to know things is frustrating. Listening to other people whisper is frustrating, that's why it is so bothersome.

Yes the sound of whispering is annoying . I was told when I was growing up that it was rude to wisper .The sound of whispering is like the sound of a wasp or other insect buzzing around it is very annoying not loud enough to hear what is being said but loud enough to disturb the silence . I do get paranoid and think they are talking about me when I am the third person in a situation and the other two are whispering together.

I can find whispering annoying too, especially in a library. I think it's just the fact that in such a place (or in a cinema, or late at nite etc), you are NOT SUPPOSED TO make noise, so people whisper, yet it is disturbing as you can hear it!!! Confusing...?

I would say that you are insecure with yourself, but I don't know you so I can't know for sure. Just try to remember that even if someone says something about you doesn't mean it's true. If it is literally the sound of a whisper that annoys you I don't really know what to tell you.

One ends to think that people are talking about you behind your back when you hear whispering.

maybe you associate whispering with something negative? like gossip or giving others a bad name..?

the sound may not be too appealing, but sometimes it is necessary to lower your voice to the extent of whispering. i prefer to hear people talking quietly than to be in the midst of people talking loudly. I hate too much sound!

I hate whispering too, ESPECIALLY when people whisper to me. I think it's because there is something dominant to it. When a person whispers to you they're telling you things that they wouldn't want other people to hear and thereby make you their confidant and accomplice. They're doing something non-neutral and expect you to participate in it. I HATE it.

I think it has to do with frequency of sound, especially for males, is a little more irritating for our minds.
Women are wired to be more compassionate toward higher pitched sounds, explaining the role they have in carrying and nuturing offspring. I'm not speaking socially, I'm speaking from a pure biological standpoint and allow science to back my claims.
